Dade City, Florida
McKenzie Smith makes functional tableware in the tradition of English folk pottery. His work is most often soda, salt, or wood fired. Most pieces have some exposed clay to show the exciting results between the atmospheric firings and his clay body. Smith has a strong sense of geometry and structure to his pots, which are primarily wheel thrown and sometimes altered. His work is characterized by graceful brushwork and the opportunistic pop of turquoise color on an otherwise primarily warm, tan and black palette. McKenzie was a Northern Clay Center gallery artist many years ago; we are thrilled to have his work back for a featured artists show in 2015. McKenzie received his BFA from the University of South Florida—Tampa and his MFA from the University of Florida–Gainesville. He has been a resident and taught workshops at many places across the country.
