Joanna Powell holds a BFA from the University of North Texas and an MFA from the University of Colorado–Boulder. She has been a resident artist at The Archie Bray Foundation, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Kansas State University, and Denison University. In 2015, she received an Emerging Artist award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Powell is interested in objects that can anchor the values of a culture over time and speak of a specific intention. Through installation, she contextualizes common objects with personal meaning. Her work is the result of considering longing, privacy, history, and sexuality. By the arrangement of objects, Powell sets up a situation where the viewer can forget about an object’s function and call attention to its possibilities as pure matter with its own intentions.
