Jil Franke

Jil Franke
St. Paul, MN

Jil Franke received her BS in art education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota. Franke developed a high school clay program at Breck School that incorporated alternative firing techniques. Her making process includes paper patterns, slab techniques, and the woodfiring process. Her work is developed from variations on a theme and is influenced by travels to new destinations. Franke’s pottery is shown in galleries across the country and has been included in exhibitions both nationally and internationally. She “grew up on a farm in Minnesota.” Franke notes, “I am influenced by oil cans, funnels, grain bins, farm implements, and objects found in this rural environment. I like chopping wood, wadding the pots, bricking up the door, and stoking the fire. Wood firing can be full of surprises. I enjoy unpredictability and the unexpected when firing my work in a wood-fired kiln.”
