Mike Helke holds an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Prior to that, he studied ceramics at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and spent formative years as a studio artist and employee of Northern Clay Center. He is currently an adjunct instructor at the University of Wisconsin—River Falls. Helke works in earthenware, generally covered in crackle and saturated black slips, layered with clear or celadon-like glazes. He uses decorative shapes on the surface of playful forms to create dynamic positive and negative spaces. They are part contemplative studies in composition and part everyday object.
